Determining your needs

Your life insurance needs will depend on a number of factors, including the size of your family, the nature of your financial obligations, your career stage, and your goals. The two basic types of life insurance are term life and permanent (cash value) life:

Term insurance

Term insurance policies provide life insurance protection for a specific period of time. If you die during the coverage period, your beneficiary receives the policy's death benefit. If you live to the end of the term, the policy simply terminates, unless you’re able to renew for a new period.

Permanent insurance

Permanent insurance policies offer protection for your entire life, regardless of your health. As you pay your premiums, a portion of each payment is placed in a cash value account, which continues to grow tax-deferred as long as the policy is active. If you cancel your coverage before you die, you're entitled to receive the cash value, minus any loans and surrender charges.

Long-Term Care Insurance

As people live longer, the chance of one day needing extended care only increases

No wonder long-term care insurance is becoming more and more important. After all, the costs associated with nursing homes, assisted living, at-home care and other medical services can be astronomical—and these aren't covered by health insurance.

With long-term care insurance, you may use the coverage either for yourself or a family member. Most importantly, you’ll have an affordable way to pay for long-term care—without eroding your personal savings.

Disability Insurance

Protecting your family from the unexpected

Disability Insurance pays benefits when you are unable to earn a living because you are sick or injured. Most disability policies pay you a benefit that replaces a percentage of your earned income when you can’t work. The possibility of not being able to earn a living due to a disability increases your need to protect your income with private disability insurance.
